air conditioner low-pressure port

I was told to follow the aluminum tube from the compressor to the evaporation unit. I get this but the only low-pressure hookup I could possibly see in this is not in the aluminum tube but in what looks like a collection unit or some such thing, right in front of the evaporation. Would this be the same thing as being in the aluminum tubing or is this a completely separate set up.
