I’m measuring push rods for my 5.3 that I just rebuilt. The heads have been shaved. I noticed that exhaust and intake push rods are different sizes. My question is, when taking push rod length do I add an amount for lifter preload? Because I’ve seen videos of people just measuring without adding for lifter pre load while some add the amount of preload for lifters added. I have a set of Elgin ls7 lifter I was going to add to measurement of 0.050 if that is correct procedure.

Also, when I measure do I measure from tip to tip, or do I measure from just below the that sits in cup of lifter and rocker?

I would measure the pushrods from tip to tip. Also, there is a method of measuring the push rods as it pertains to the travel of the rocker, so you get the same movement before and after the centerline of the duration. Yes, I would account for the lifter preload as well. Are you a performance engine builder?
