I’m measuring push rods for my 5.3 that I just rebuilt. The heads have been shaved. I noticed that exhaust and intake push rods are different sizes. My question is when taking push rod length do I add an amount for lifter pre load? Because I’ve seen videos of people just measuring with out adding for lifter pre load while some add the amount of pre load for lifters added. I have a set of Elgin ls7 lifter I was going to add to measurement of 0.050 if that is correct procedure.

Also when I measure do I mesaure from tip to tip or do I measure from just below the that sits in cup of lifter and rocker?

I would measure the pushrods from tip to tip. Also, there is a method of measuring the push rods as it pertains to the travel of the rocker so you get the same movement before and after the centerline of the duration. Yes, I would account for the lifter preload as well. Are you a performance engine builder?
