Camshaft timing?

I'm not quite sure I understand. You need the scanner to set the timing on this vehicle as you already know, but the scan tool should have a setting to time. If you can identify the timing from your scanner, run the engine at about 1000 RPM's and adjust the distributor until you get TDC +/- 2 degrees The camshaft timing is below. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Is the scanner designed to only read advance? If so, to the best of my knowledge, it won't work.

I attached the marks in which you need to time the engine and the firing order. As for the distributor, that just needs to be turned until you line up the ignition timing using these marks on the crank pulley.

Also, you do not need to shave the head unless it is warped. So if the head is straight then you leave it alone.

According to the Mitchelle manual, timing is set at 0 degrees BTDC at an idle. There will be two timing marks, one on the harmonic balancer (indicating degrees) and one is mounted on the timing chain cover.

If they are rusted, take a brillo pad and clean it. IT should come clean. Another thing (I don't like to depend on) is to remove the #1 spark plug, place a long screwdriver into the cylinder and by hand, slowly turn the engine. When the screwdriver comes up and then starts down, that it TDC (right at the summit of its travel).
