My name is Alex,
I was browsing your website and you seem like very professional automotive experts, I was hoping you will be able to give some friendly advice regarding a quick but unusual question, which I was researching for some time now, but could not find a definitive answer.

As part of a research I am part of in Ben-Gurion University (IL), we are testing the possibility to gather real time information regarding a car's performance and behavior.

My question is:

Is it possible to read sensor information from the on-board computer in real-time while driving (keep a small device connected to the OBD slot all the time)?
In this stage, we are interested in the most popular family car manufacturers in our country (e.G Hyundai, KIA, Mazda, Ford)

If so, What kind of information I can collect using this method?

Certainly, that is possible. We do that now with our scan tools. They already sell devices that both record and display data to a driver. AirBag modules already work like an airplane "black box" and record and freeze info at the moment of impact. What you have to remember though is the speed of the processors is limited so the more data that you request, the more lag you will see in it's ability to update data. The fewer PIDs that you monitor, the faster they update because this is processed information.
