A/C clutch not engaging?

Hello all,

Thank you for the advice.
I have a 2010 Grand Caravan, rear A/C, 108? Mileage. The A/C no longer blew cold air when I left work this past evening. I checked the compressor for the clutch engaging and it was not. I've done quite a bit of reading and see that this model does not have a fuse and relay setup but has a TIPM that supplies power to engage the clutch under predetermined conditions. I have not ohmed the clutch coil or verified if power is getting to the clutch yet. Before I did that, I wanted to get this thread started and find out what other components have input in order for the TIMP to supply power to the clutch, i.E, low pressure switch, high pressure switch, blower motor, radiator fan, correct static pressure and so on.
So, my question is, what components have a play (have to be working correctly) in enabling the TIMP to send power to the compressor clutch?
And what resistance should I read when ohming out the clutch coil?
Any wire diagrams or schematics would be much appreciated.
Any other suggestions are welcome.

Hello,

First of all, please ensure that you have sufficient refrigerant in the A/C system.
Low or no refrigerant in the A/C system will cause the A/C clutch not to be engaged.

Always inspect the IOD fuse prior to diagnosing any automatic temperature control (ATC) system concerns. Make sure the fuse is functional and fully seated into the terminals of the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) located in the engine compartment.

The IOD fuse is fuse J13, 60A, in the TIPM

Below are wiring diagrams for the A/C clutch control from the TIPM to the A/C compressor clutch, PCM to TIPM and AC pressure switch to TIPM

Wiring can be tested using a voltmeter or test light.

Yes, the pressure was the first thing on my list to check, IOD fuse, then voltage to clutch, clutch resistance and if those did not reveal anything, then the pressure switch wire continuity to TIPM.

What is a good resistance value for the clutch coil?

Besides the pressure switch, what other components play a role in allowing the clutch to engage?

Hello,

An A/C clutch coil usually measures 2-5 ohm.

See image below.

The main components for the A/C clutch to engage are sufficient pressure, signal from pressure transducer to TIPM, A/C clutch control command from PCM to TIPM.

The pressure transducer will send a varying voltage, usually 0.5-4.5 V, depending on the pressure in the system.

Hi Boris,
I'm back, up and at it.
I have not done any of the above yet, but I have noticed that my radiator cooling fan does not come on when I turn on the A/C or even when the car has been driven for an hour. I had an AC problem w/another Dodge GC (2006) and my memory seems to recall that the problem was because the cooling fan did not come on. Do you know if that is a prerequisite for the A/C to work in this 2010?

Hi Boris,

Well, my worst fear came true, the A/C system has no Freon in it, I put the gauges on it and there was no pressure. I'll respond back when I have something.
