Starter not working

The common problem the Nippendenso starters develop is an intermittent rather loud clunk but it will not spin the engine. That is due to worn solenoid contacts. If you cycle the ignition switch enough times, it will eventually crank. How about reconnecting the cables and trying to start the engine? The starter housing is probably corroded. The torque from cranking should break it free. You can replace the solenoid contacts separately if you want to and if that is the problem you are having. They are very inexpensive and fairly easy to find.

Hello,

These starter do not get stuck, you must have removed the wrong bolts. Here is a guide to help you see what you are in for when doing the job and diagrams below to show you what to do on your car:

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

I am having the same problem. I most certainly removed the correct bolts; there are only 2. It was wedged in the engine.

I drive my Siennea alomost 100 miles everyday or more. It hit 150000 miles and has broke down 3 time this week. So I have replaced my alternator, belt, and battery this week. It was running so nice and starting strong. Until one stop of 50-70 times a day I start the car it just went WINGggggggg. Free spinning when you hit the key. Is it the strater before I invest the time and $250.

Thanks
David Lemieux

If the starter is spinning without cranking the engine, there are two possible causes, but both are related to the starter. The drive gear's over-running clutch could be broken or worn. They can be intermitent or they can fail completely.

It is also possible for the drive's shaft to become rusted so the gear won't slide freely to engage the flywheel.

If you have the little silver Nippendenso starter, they also develop worn solenoid contacts that results in a no-crank condition. Replacing the starter is a common repair, but a rebuilt unit should cost less than 250 bucks unless you're paying a mechanic to replace it.
