how common is tie rod ends breaking or getting worn out on a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500

I had the wheels balanced last week but the shaking is back.

Tie rods do wear out, but it usually takes more than 40K to do it unless you have oversized tires or a lift on the truck. As far as breaking, that is odd but happens due to neglect. Before they break, it is very noticeable they need replaced. If they do break, the tire on the broken side can turn any direction it wants. If you have a concern that you have a bad one, have it checked.
