You didn't say what the problem or symptom is, so as a general rule, if the motor runs either way at normal speed, it's okay. If it doesn't run either way at all, it's usually not caused by the motor itself. Wiring problems are much more common. If it only runs a few inches, then stops, it's usually caused by frayed cables on the regulator.
Measuring the voltages on the two motor terminals will go a long way in coming up with a diagnosis.
