My Envoy is making a high pitched whine sound when the gas is stepped on. One shop said it is the alternator making the sound. Another said it could be the alternator failing because the battery is failing. The battery charge indicator on the dash seems to hunt somewhere between the normal 1/2 point, and often goes down to the 1/4th level. With the lights off, heater off, the charge indicates normal, but quickly but slightly falls when I get off the gas. With the lights on, or heater on high, the charge indicator will not raise to the normal level no matter how much gas I give it. I have never heard an alternator make noise. Do they? I have replaced the battery once in this high mileage vehicle, which indicated five years ago it was good for 3 years. I have had the belts replaced, the pulleys replaced, but I have never had the alternator replaced. Alternator, battery, or both? Or Not Either?

If you have had the battery for 5 years get rid of it an get another one. The alternator is probably the bearing making noise and is going bad as well.
