Hi,
There are several things that can cause that to happen. Most commonly is a loss of fuel pressure or ignition spark.
However, what you did to make it start indicates the fuel pressure could be too high. Is it starting the same at this point or not at all? If it is still a hard or no start condition, let's check fuel pressure.

If you look below, I attached the pressure specifications for you.
If the vehicle is not starting at all at this point, see if it will start if you use starting fluid. If it does and then stalls, we know there is a fuel issue. If there is no change, we need to check for spark at the plugs.

As far as the fuel pressure gauge is concerned, most parts stores will lend one to you.
