I went to start the truck and when I put the key in the ignition and turned it, only cranking would happen, and it wouldn't start. I attempted this about 5 times. Finally, I tried it one more time while pushing the accelerator pedal and thankfully it started. What would cause this to not start when just turning the key?

Thank you

Hi,

When it did start, did you notice any black or gray smoke from the exhaust? I ask because it sounds like it was flooded.

When you depress the throttle, it shuts down the injectors to clear a flooded engine. That is basically what you did.

Let me know if you notice any smoke.

Take care,

Joe

There was no black smoke that came out of the exhaust. What would be causing it to turn over but not start in the first place?

Thank you

Hi,

There are several things that can cause that to happen. Most commonly is a loss of fuel pressure or ignition spark.

However, what you did to make it start indicates the fuel pressure could be too high. Is it starting the same at this point or not at all? If it is still a hard or no start condition, let's check fuel pressure.

Here is a link that explains how it's done:

If you look below, I attached the pressure specifications for you.

If the vehicle is not starting at all at this point, see if it will start if you use starting fluid. If it does and then stalls, we know there is a fuel issue. If there is no change, we need to check for spark at the plugs. Here is a link that explains how it's done.

As far as the fuel pressure gauge needed, most parts stores will lend one to you.

Let me know what you find.

As far as the fuel pressure gauge is concerned, most parts stores will lend one to you.

Let me know what you find.
