Car not starting

How do you know whether it's your starter going bad or your battery. The car every so often will not start. It has been in the shop twice in the last few months and they have done a tune-up and replaced the fuel pump but at least once a month it won't start. Someone has told me it's probably my starter and someone else has said it might be the battery.

Are you saying it cranks good but won't start or it won't even crank? You have to do testing when problem occurs. If it won't even crank, test the starter circuit.

Yeah it won't even crank. Thought about taking it somewhere today for them to test the starter and the battery but once again I can't get it started. Thanks for your help.
