Unfortunately, I haven't found the secret. I really don't see a way without removing the passenger side axle shaft. Even Mitchel11 has no suggestion.

To remove the alternator from my santa fe, you don't need to remove the drive axle. All you need to do is jack up the SUV on that side and the drive axle drops enough for you to remove the alternator. Please send me back my $10.00

Honestly, I have never worked on one with the diesel engine. However, I can't imagine that the alt would be much different. It would be nothing more than disconnecting the battery, removing the wiring from the rear of the alt, and unbolting and replacing it. Of course you would need to remove the belt first. If you have any mechanical ability, I would say give it a try.

Let me know if you run into trouble. I should be able to help you with this.

The clearance to remove the alternator is insufficient. What recommendations to remove it from the engine compartment do you have?

Hi nodough,

According to removal procedures, you would have to remove the lower mount bolts which requires the removal of the axle halfshaft.

The alternator bolt snapped in half and the other half is integrated in the alternator. Also, the main bracket that is connected to the chassis where the alternator lays is also cracked. Have had 3 mechanics look at car and they don't want to fix it. Any suggestions. I really need a car, but is it worth fixing and how much do you think it will cost for something like this job.

Someone suggested that I have a welder come and weld the bracket that connects to the main chasis. I need your help is this worth fixing or not. The engine runs great.

Helen

If the bolt is in the alternator get another alternator and let them worry about removing it they only want the core. Then the welder will want the bracket off so he can weld it properly so this may be tied up for a couple of days maybe.

I would like to know if I got over charged to put in a new alternator in my car.

I had an emergency repair on my car. I had it towed to a garage in wallingford, Ct. They diagonosed it as the alternator, which I suspected it was.

Problem is, it seems very high, the final cost. They replaced the alternator with a remanufactured alternator. The final cost was $495.00. The break down was $135.00 labor, which only took about 2 hours from start of diagonsis, to getting the part, to putting it in, $249.00 for the alternator, $30.00 for the belt. $8.0 to recharge the battery, electrical system test $39.00. Thank you for a response

Hello -

Well....... That is close in some ways.....I hate to say... Here is my brake down.

My info is about $555 for all..... About 96 for labor and 459 for parts but that is for a new alternator and I can't figure in the electrical check. So if we go by this..... And yours is a rebuilt that maybe a little high... But depending on the area costs it may be okay..... As it is only about $60 off.

Too bad you couldn't have done it yourself.......I show, depending on the alternator for your car a 110 amp one at Autozone for a lifetime warranty for about $201 and a 95 amp for about $170. Belt is about $25 and they can check out your system for free.

So if you could have done it would have been between $209 and $242.

But, if you were stuck there isn't much you can do about that. Even as a mechanic if I break down on the open road, no tools etc I too am at the mercy of the area.

I think you should feel okay..... My estimate is only about $60 off from yours..... So try not to worry about it. I think you are okay.......

Hello -

Hey one other thing that may make you feel a little better especially if your car needs it and it is free to repair.

It looks like you may have some recalls on your vehicle. The dealer may fix these for free. Please contact the dealer service department, give them the VIN number of your car and have them check on these to see if they apply to you.

HI there,

Check that the battery terminals are clean & tight, check earths and have the battery load tested for an internal short, also just re check the charge rate of the alternator in car.

The alternator on our 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe is going bad. Our local mechanic wants to sell us a $400 Hyundai alternator and says that the one at Autozone for $178 (lifetime warranty) will go bad in a few weeks to mths. He says he wouldn't waste his time on the one from Autozone. The one from Autozone has a lifetime warranty and a 3 mth labor warranty. Can you give me any advice on which way to go? Thanks!
