At 91, 000 we spent $3000 with or local chevrolet dealer (Ron Hulett, Camdenton MO) to have the AWD Smart Drive repaired. The 4X4 is hardly ever used and there is no button or shift into four wheel drive to test if the four wheel is working.

So. What's the deal on Smart Drive AWD Oldsmobile Bravada? I can not spend $3000 every two years to replace the Smart Drive. What part or what is it that breaks or wears out causing the four wheels system to not engage? My non-chevy dealer mechanic says the fluid is clean, ther are no metal shavings and the unit makes no noise

Is there a fix that does not cost $3000.

Hello rhoadd,
Sorry to say it sounds like your Chevy dealer may have taken advantage of you. Certainly not the first time I've heard of issue being resolved with large amounts of money. I too had the same issue where everytime to turned, a loud "thunking" sound occurred. Sounded like your wheel was about to fall off. After some research, I learned that the problem was due to the type of differential fluid used from the factory. That type was not "slippery" enough for lack of a better term, or did not provide the lubrication required. The fix was replacing with the newer fliuid. Sorry, I can't provide the exact type at this time, but will if required.
I would pay that Chevy dealer another visit and demand some satisfaction.

Good luck!
