Ok im going to try to make this as short as possible. Ive had this car for a while and done a lot of research and heard that the 2.2 ecotec engines are know for timing chain/tensioner issues. The engine has a ticking which I thought sounded like it was coming from the timing chain area, it doesnt sound too bad, I have also heard that these engines are generally noisey. I took it to a local shop, specifically car x and talked to them, the guy came out and listened to my car and told me it was just normal valve train noise, but im still not convinced the ticking doesnt have anything to do with the timing chain/tensioner, maybe im just being paranoid because of all the issues I have read regarding the timing chain. The weirdest part and what really makes me wonder, is that when my car is completely cold and has been sitting over night or during the day when you first start it, it sounds fine but when put into gear reverse or drive I get some sort of louder tick or clicking coming from the engine area and if I put it back in park it completely stops, once the has been running for a bit and warms up a little that noise completely goes away and is non existent when I put the car into reverse etc, I normally start it and let it run for a little before I dive off because if I do that the noise isnt there, it only happens when the car is cold started up and put directly in reverse etc, what is this noise im hearing? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Everything you described sounds to me like an exhaust leak. A leak where the pipe connects to the exhaust manifold will make a ticking noise, but it's usually more prevalent when accelerating. The engine rocks when accelerating and coasting so that joint is a spring-loaded swivel joint. Most cars use a gasket in there that can deteriorate and leak.

Thank you, that actually makes sense because during the time its making the ticking sound after I put it into drive to accelerate there is some hesitation which my guess would be cause by an exhaust leak, after driving for a bit that hesitation also stops
