Our car started making a rhythmic clicking noise every 4-5 seconds with a light loss in power (dimming lights) with the heater on. The mechanic replaced the AC Compressor because they said it was bad, and the clicking still happened. Then the pulley seized, broke the belt and tensioner. We are wondering if the ac compressor was even the problem to begin with. What exactly would cause the clicking with slight power loss with heater/defrost usage? That was the only symptom we were having.

That is a tough question. Since the lights are dimming, it almost sounds like it is related to the alternator. I would recommend removing the serp belt and check all belt driven accessories to see if any are causing the noise.
