It could be a leak. However, when they flushed the radiator, did the water flow freely through it? Did it still have a clogged appearance when it was done? I have seen the insides of radiators clog and no matter how many flushes you do, they still remain plugged. Thus, the radiator doesn't cool the coolant.

I purchased this vehicle two months ago from dealership in Columbia. Have driven locally to work, etc only about 20-25 miles per day max. No issues with the vehicle.

Took it on a trip to St Louis (120 miles). While driving to St Louis after about 1.5 hr the message "Overheated Transmission" appeared on Message Center with"E" on Transmission PRNDL indicator. We stopped the car and checked the manual. It says "turn off engine and let it cool".

After about half hour we were able to start the car. No message. We drove back to Columbia later in the evening, after 1 hr stopped in between for food. No message. Just when we reached Columbia about 1 hr after food stop the same message appeared again.

I checked the car Sunday morning and No message. The car runs fine with no unusual sound from transmission. No burning smell of oil, etc.

An oil change that included inspection was performed last Tuesday, 07 Oct at local Lincoln dealership (Joe Machens) and everything was fine!

I would appreciate your opinion on possible cause and future course of action

Thank you.

It could be a few things. A sensor could be bad, the trans cooler could be plugging. Have you checked to see if there are any trouble codes that can be retrieved?

Engine Cooling problem
2002 Lincoln LS V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

After having a new thermostat installed on my car ($440.00) for over-heating my car seemed to be ok for about 2 months. Then it overheated. I took it back to the shop and they told me that a code came back showing a bad cooling fan and wanted to charge an additional 900.00 to replace it. I didn't believe this was the problem so I left. The car seems to overheat about once every 2-3 months. I pull over, let it cool then continue on my way. But this week it has been overheating a lot. And the heat hasn't worked at "idle" all winter long. It is full of coolant and the fan is running as fall as I can tell. When it overheats, I check the coolant bottle and it isn't even that hot. Is it possible they put a faulty thermostat in my car that has gotten worse over time? Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

I'd say that there is an air pocket in the cooling system

From what I have seen, it is not feasible as you would have to also remove the pump that runs the fan

I changed the thermostat and the water pump and the radiator flushed out and my car is still overheating. The hose from the thermostat to the bottom of radiator is cold, but the other side of the hoses to the radiator is hot. What could be the problem.3.9 engine. Plus 1 side of radiator is warm but the other side is cold

Remove the thermostat then rev the motor. You should see good flow through the radiator. Put the thermostat back in stick a hose running on slow in the radiator. Remove the top hose. Start it up when the thermostat opens you will see the water coming out of the top hose and the hose will refill the radiator As long as you didn't overheat it bad the head gasket shouldn't be blown. Feel the radiator top and bottom it should be the same temperature with no cold spots. If it is still overheating I would replace the radiator. He

Given the age of the car my first suspect, especially because of your description of the symptoms, would be corroded radiator cooling fins. The clue is the overheating will be more severe at higher speeds because the increased air flow through it is ineffective. If the cooling fins crumble like a rotten chocolate chip cookie, like mine did many years ago, replace the radiator. An additional clue is you can bring the engine temperature down by running the heater on high and full hot.

I have a 2001 Lincoln LS V6, 3.0L. It keeps on overheating. I have replaced the water pump, coolant, thermostat, head temperature sensor and also flushed the system. It still overheats though and coolant bubbles out of the degas bottle when it overheats. Please can you give me a decent anwser someone?

You may have already fixed the root cause of the initial overheating but in the process you got it too hot at least once and now you likely have a blown head gasket. You will have to get it chemical tested for that.
