Hello,

So, my question is about the vehicle listed above. It's my friend's car and it's currently in a cranking no start condition. The car has been experiencing a certain problem since she bought it where it loses power and eventually shuts off when driving on the freeway for long periods of time. Many parts have been replaced including the MAF sensor and ignition coil. We were thinking it could be a clogged fuel filter because we noticed that there is a lot of vibration in the engine (visibly) when looking under the hood while the car is running. The car has also thrown several misfire codes over time. We had a really hard time trying to figure out where the fuel filter was on this car, and finally came to the conclusion that it must be inside the sending unit/ just the sock itself which is attached to the fuel pump. We took the fuel pump out to look at it and then put it back in and now the car is cranking but not starting. We triple checked all the wiring connections on the fuel pump and nothing seemed at all different from when we took it out. Did we somehow trigger the immobilizer system by doing this? The fuel pump is audibly running so we know it's working but the car is just cranking and only turns over with starting fluid. Any input on what could have gone wrong when we reinstalled the fuel pump that's causing this no fuel condition?
Thank you!

Hi,

You are correct about the fuel filter. It is in the tank and part of the sending unit. See pic below

Now, the idea you removed the pump has nothing to do with an immobilizer. It sounds like either the pump is just faulty, or I guess you could have kinked a fuel line. Did you check the fuel lines themself to see if any are kinked?

Because it starts with starting fluid, you have already confirmed it is a fuel-related issue. So, even though you hear the pump, it may not be producing enough pressure to run the engine.

As a result, we need to check fuel pressure. I attached the directions specific to this vehicle for testing. Take a look through them and let me know if you are comfortable performing them. You will need a fuel pressure gauge, but most parts stores will lend one to you.

If the pressure is good, then we will check for injector power issues.

Let me know what you find or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe

HI Joe,

Thank you so much for the quick response. That is very helpful because I was wondering where to tap in to read the fuel pressure. I will rent a kit and do that ASAP it doesn't look too hard. I did check all the fuel lines and they don't seem to be kinked at all. I'm wondering if I somehow damaged the fuel pressure regulator when I took it off and looked at it, but it seems unlikely. I'm pretty sure after some digging that the fuel filter is actually in the plastic upper part of the fuel pump assembly and not inside the sending unit. Am I wrong about that? We ordered a whole new fuel pump assembly that includes the regulator and sending unit to try out. I'm just a bit confused about how the car was starting up every time until we r&rd the fuel pump so I feel like I must have done something wrong I just can't seem to find it. Hopefully the fuel pressure test will help us figure it out, I'll let you know what results I get from that.
Thanks again!
Ella

Hi,

You are very welcome. I really don't think you did anything wrong. And yes, the filter is located at the top. I call that assembly the sending unit. LOL

As far as the fuel pressure regulator, 99% of the time you won't stop the fuel it will just be supplied at too high of a pressure. Actually, I don't think I've ever seen one that stopped fuel pressure.

I attached a pic below showing the filter location. Letter A points to it.

Let me know what you find or if I can help.

Take care,

joe

Oh, okay, I think I got the motor and the sending unit confused. I guess the easiest way to replace the fuel filter on this vehicle is to just replace the whole pump/ sending unit assembly. Our new assembly should be coming in a week.
I'll let you know what happens with the fuel pressure reading.
Thank you!
