Steering wheel issue

Hello all,
My mother has a 2002 chevy cavlier and is having a steering column problem. When she goes to use the tilt wheel lever it does not lock into place and the steering wheel has constant play in it. Ive been told its a very expensive job but I think its simple I just want some opinions and I have no experience on that problem so I greatlt appriciate it if someone could please help me out and email me. I dont know about your year/model in particular but i've done gm tilt wheels and it's not an 'easy' job. Although once you've done 1 it does get easier in some ways. If you get a quote, post it so I can compare to my own rate.

Thanks for the info. But do you think that is the problem? The tilt wheel operates fine. But after the tilt wheel is locked thats when the play/movement starts. Does the whole tilt wheel assembely need changed or could I possibly get away with changing something else besides that headache lol. Thank you for your time and I would greatly appreciate if you could get back to me!

First you said is does not lock. Then you say it does. Anyway it's not the locking part itself that is loose. It's deeper into column. It's a matter of tightening some bolts. Getting to them is the headache. Some people just choose to change entire column with 1 from used parts auto salvage yard as they find that easier to do. You may want to stop by there and get an opinion on what exactly is the problem with your column. Just in case it's something other than the ordinary for these.
