The timing belt drives the cam shaft which operate the valve train, this belt is driven by the crank shaft, if it slips the engine will not run at all, I would be having the clutch checked as what you describe sounds like a slipping clutch.

Wow that's good to know. Mr. Lube just informed me that when my 1999 Corolla started it sounded a bit 'rough' (although it sounds ok to me) and I should immediately consider changing the timeing belt because 'Thats what kills these cars most often' lol.
Sigh :)

From 1998 to now toyota corolla dont use no more timing belt ( only timing chaing ) so if you hear any noise from the front of the engine ck the oil level. Maybe is low and the timing chaing may make some noise

Your vehicle is equipped with a timing chain, not a timing belt. Chains only need replaced if they have broken or become loose. Do you still need replacement procedures?
