Car was fine, then it suddenly would not start. The battery is fine, no clicking, but it will not crank at all. Unfortunately, this happened a couple days before major neck surgery, so now it has been sitting idle in the garage for seven months. Help?? I tried the starter relay, but that is not it. I cannot spend a lot on replacement parts only to find they are not the issue.

make sure the battery is fully charged and in good condition including a load test. make sure terminal ends are clean then try resetting security system if no manual look online for your car on how to reset it.

While driving, my car chugged twice then died. I am unable to restart the car, the engine won't even turn over. We have checked the battery and starter, both needed replacement. All dash lights and headlights work, and we are getting power to the starter (tested with a volt meter). The battery terminals are clean and we have tested the relay and checked the fuses. Suggestions? Does this sound like an electrical or engine problem?

wont start, engine will not turn over

This guide will help us get started.

If it cranks over the starter has done its job. Try carb cleaner in the throttle body-did it start and stall? If so check the fuel pressure and comeback with the readings

Earlier you said you're getting power at the starter-have a helper put key to start position and bang on the starter if it kicks and engages the engine -defective starter.

We've tried that, with the old starter and the brand new one (installed last night), no luck. Thanks for your prompt answers. Much quicker than I had anticipated!!

You might want to triple check the battery condition and its connection make sure its clean and tighten, also at the starter relay and starter

First problem I had was a battery issue. I fixed that and then the car turns a second then locks up. We have changed the starter also, but it is doing the same thing. I have never had a motor do this. My car is the Bullitt model.

We can check those off the list, too. Unfortunately we've previously had no luck with those suggestions either

Can you turn the engine 2 to 2-1/2 full revolutions, in its normal direction with the key off?

Using a ratchet or a wrench on the harmonic balancer bolt? (Picture of my 1977 Jeep CJ-5 6 cylinder below).

Other than a mechanical issue or failure, coolant in a cylinder (head gasket) cannot be compressed and will show your symptoms.

Removing the plugs and turning it might verify this possibility.

Any recent abnormal issues happen prior to this?

I will give that a try in the morning. Car sat for a while, which is why the battery was dead. Hooked the jump box to it and it started. Though it did do this at this point. Possible symptoms of a starter going back so we changed it. When you turn the key it turns over very short and then whole engine jumps like it would be locking up. Prior to this no real issues. Use to be my daily driver.

Does it not turn over just when it is hot?If so,It could be the starter. To find out if that is the problem, you will need two people to check and a 12 volt meter. With one person in the car and one under, set up the meter to the + on the starter and ground the other side.At that point, have the person in the car turn on the key as in starting the car.If you read 12 volts and the starter is not trurning out, your starter is bad.If no voltage,it could be the starter relay or in my case the clutch safety relay switch.

Check the fuel pressure if its within specs and the alternator if its putting out, could also be a defective ignition switch-start here and then let us know-

Hello, please help/advise.

2004 Ford Mustang convertible / V6 / 3.6L / automatic / 140,000 miles / new battery / only year old spark plugs / distributor coil.
Car is garage-parked . . . not a daily driver . . . but crank & run it every weekend.
We just had unusually cold Houston weather (12 degrees) . . . and I did notice the negative/ground cable on the battery was "loose"/not tight . . . could pull it off of the negative terminal by hand.

Symptoms: Turn the ignition and the car attempts to crank . . . turning over strongly (not battery) . . . but will not fire up/run . . . headlights come on / radio plays.

OK . . . so took off both battery cables / cleaned them / replaced & tightened them snugly . . . same results . . . turns over strongly but will not fire up/run.

Noticed that the "THEFT" light on dashboard is blinking weirdly/erratically . . . and hearing something sounding like ??? 4x times mechanical repetitive sound (like behind the radio ???) when sitting in car attempting to crank immediately after turning engine over ???

Put jumper cables on . . . same results . . . turns over (even stronger now) . . . but will not fire up/run.

1. Fuel Supply (frozen gas line ??? fuel pump ??? fuel filter ???
2. Fire (Spark Plugs ??? Spark Plug Cables ??? Distributor Coil ??? My guess & will start here.
3. Engine Compression ???

Good morning,

Do you hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key to the on position?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/car-cranks-but-wont-start

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-fuel-system-pressure-and-regulator

When you crank the engine, does the tachometer show a little RPM?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-test-an-ignition-system

Yes, I would do a compression test to be sure the engine is good.
