I think my starter is going bad on my tr uk the chassis has 200k and motor 103k when I go out to start it when it's cold especially it hesitates to start and if its on a quarter tank it takes forever to start. Here recently when I try to start it when it turns over it makes the battery die or at least it re sets my clock. I had the battery and altenator checked battery was bad but was less than a year old got a new one. The altenator was fine. How ever it still is heasitating to start like its dragging but it still is re setting my clock. Please help ASAP. Also if it is the starter will a starter out of a 1999 chev caviler with the 2.2 4 cyl motor. Bc mine is a 2000 s10 with the 2.3 as well

The starters are the same if both have the 2.2 liter engine (in your question you said that your truck had a 2.3 liter; was that a typo?)

You can remove the starter and have it tested at autozone (or some other auto parts store) for FREE.

If they are able to perform a "starter current draw test" on the starter, you won't have to remove it to see if it is good.

Yes it was a typo the guy at advanced auto said that I couldn't use the starter off of a 99 caviler with the same motor. On that note what would make it not want to start when it's cold if below a quarter of a tank it takes a good while to finally get it to start. Before I replaced the battery I went out and tryed to start it with less than a quarter tank and it was cold and snowy I ran it dead trying to start it. Put cables on it and still wouldn't start. Went and put some gas in a can and put in it then it fired right up even tho it barley has enough juice to turn over. I let it warm up for an hour then turn it off and it was still acting up

If it only acts up around 1/4 tank of gas, I would suspect that the gauge is reading wrong and in fact you're nearly out of gas.

For clarification, are you saying that the starter turns over slowly at 1/4 tank or that it turns normally (when the battery is strong enough) but does not start?

It hasn't been doing it that long the it not acting like its getting gas at 1/4 tank it does it more often when it's cold enough to snow. And after I got my a new battery any my altenator checked out ok it's been struggling to start like turns over really slow and almost sounds like its not gonna start it does that now at any fuel level. If this. Helps you when I pump gas I have to pump it slow or it kicks the pump off.

Have the starter checked (you'll most likely have to remove it and then take it to the auto parts store for a diagnosis).
While its off, clean the battery cables at both ends to be sure you're getting a good connection.
