Couple of weeks ago, my car started shifting late from first to second, the rpm needle goes up to 3,000 while the speedometer at 25 mph. That is if I baby the gas pedal, but if I push the pedal hard my rpm gets up to 4,000 before engaging second gear.

This is the trick I normally use if I wanted it to shift earlier before 3,000 rpm let's say at 2,500, I release the pedal slightly then it will shift to second gear but this is frustrating usually when taking off from a complete stop.

Now these are what we've done trying to fix the car: We changed transmission fluid and changed valve body yet no success. A friend asked me to adjust the TPS and kick down cable but unfortunately my TPS can't be adjusted. What I did was to unplug the TPS and drive the car, this time, the car shift fine I drove it for two days without the TPS. On my way from work the third day, she refused to shift out of first gear so I plugged back the TPS then it started shifting at higher rpm again. Please can someone help me out of this?

Couple of question, does the engine seem to have all of its power? Next is the check engine light on? If so lets use this guide to read the codes and report back.

Please run down this guide and report back.

Of course I know much about the MIL and trouble codes, but this guy did not turn on the check light even with the TPS disconnected. You only see the light when you turn the ignition on it goes off immediately at startup. I was surprised at this. Could this be a problem with the ECU?

It still has all its power it's just the late shift that makes the car sluggish at first and second gear.

Yes it can be the ECU. Can you run the codes because you can still have codes without the MIL? It sounds like you have a turbine sensor out or MAF sensor that needs to be replaced. Please let me know.

I have tried several times to scan the car with my cheap obd code reader but could not. So I borrowed a dealer level scanner that scans both engine, transmission, immobilizer, ABS and so on.

This was my experience; the engine ECU did not communicate with the scanner it wrote communication not established on the screen. I decided to scan the ABS these were the codes, Rear right sensor circuit open, rear left sensor circuit open but for the engine, no communication.

I don't think my car has a MAF sensor I think it's a MAP sensor I've only seen MAF sensors on 1MZ v6 engines mine is a 2.2 engine four cylinder.

There is an OBD11 fuse in the interior fuse panel that needs to be checked here are the data line wiring diagrams so you can see how it works (ALDL connector). Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what happens.

Thanks a lot Mr Ken for your support for trying to help me out on this issue. I ran continuity test from the data link obd2 port to the ECM there is no continuity on any of the wires to the ECM. But Looking at the diagram here, I think there should be a continuity at the #7 pin of the obd2 port and the ECM which is the white, I don't know if I'm correct.

I think this is why the ECM does not communicate with scanners, I checked for continuity from the ECM to the data link connector at the engine compartment there is continuity. Can you please tell me the exact pin number on the OBD2 port responsible for communicating with the ECM and pin number on the ECM. This is a picture of my obd2 data link connector.

I was able to diagnose the car yesterday, even with the MIL off, the computer threw up a TPS fault. Could this truly be the reason for the late shift?

So my computer can store fault codes in its memory without turning on the malfunction lamp. My plan now is to change the entire throttle body hope this helps.

Hello Mr ken, it's been a while now. I took the car to my friend who is a technician after all his efforts to dignose the car faild, he replaced the engine ECU and did some repairs on the CAN wires, now the car can be scanned with any OBD code reader

Now these are the trouble codes stored in the ECU PO135. PO141 PO340 PO450 PO500 my friend has tried all he could to fix all of these codes but could not each time I clear the codes, they return after few hours of driving. Please what do you think about these codes are they truly the reason for the late gear shift and sluggishness.

At last the fault has finally been unfold, it was the automatic gearbox. Yesterday my mechanic decided we should change the transmission so I got one from a junkyard he installed it and boom my car went.

Now my car drives like a Camry and not like one old bicycle anymore. Thanks a lot Mr ken for all your help and support and thanks to 2carpros you guys are doing well.
