Caused by low oil pressure. First, check the level. If it's low, the oil pump could suck up air instead of oil.
The sending unit could also be defective. If you have a gauge on the dash, does it read in the normal range? If it does, suspect the sending unit. If the gauge also reads low, have a mechanic install a temporary mechanical oil pressure gauge to see what the actual pressure is. If it is low, the typical cause is worn crankshaft and connecting rod bearings. Immediate replacement can often prevent further serious engine damage.
