Yes, to answer your question you can turn the check engine light off yourself. Here is a tutorial showing how to erase codes:

If you don't have access to a scanner or code reader then you can just disconnect the positive battery cable. After disconnecting the battery cable leave it disconnected for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes reconnect the battery cable as any stored codes will be erased. If any other fault codes are stored after driving your car for 25-50 miles after reconnecting the battery any fault codes will return and the check engine light will come back on.
