What could be the problem? Alternator? Short? Battery?

My 1998 Ford Contour is completely dead (electrically). A few days ago my internal and external lights were flickering. My radio would shut off then come back on wile I was driving. Then my car would act like it was stalling while driving then mysteriously come back on when I restarted it. Right now, nothing electrical works (no power locks, no clock on the dash, no radio, no lights, etc.). I can't even start it. I tried to jump the car, but it still wouldn't start. I am taking the battery to get charged, but I have no idea what else to get tested (alternator, short in wiring, etc). I don't know if this is pertinent at all, but a month ago the inside plastic shield in the front passenger wheel compartment (it keeps mud from kicking up into the engine) came off. I don't know if it exposed any wiring that may be causing this problem.

It sounds like you might have battery cables that are loose or corroded. I would clean then and tighten them and inspect them to make sure they are in good condition. Give the symptoms you are having I think this is the most likely cause of your problems.
You might have an alternator problem or a problem with the battery, but you can have those tested at most any auto parts store.

Thank you! That was exactly the problem. Nothing was wrong with my battery or alternator. My terminal clamps need to be replaced soon but I was able to get it running by tightening and cleaning the terminals. Thanks again!
