More than likely, and the preferred method, is ignition lock cylinder replacement. There are wires attached to it, that over time and rotations, end up breaking. The only method of bypassing the lock cylinder, is substituting resistors in the value of the current key pellet, across the terminals that feed the lock cylinder at the base of the steering column. This takes some electrical know-how, in that there is not much margin for error. Another method would be to purchase a lock cylinder and key, connect it at the base of the column, and tuck the cylinder(with key installed) up under the dash. This would be equivalent to having it replaced, without restoring it to factory standard.
