How do I install A/C in a cost effective way in my truck that was born without it?

I have a 97 f150 with 100,000 miles on it, runs great. I moved to a hot climate and need to add a/c. I'm not a mechanic, but I try to do anything I can. I had someone talk about adding an universal evaporator under the dash and getting the compressor and everything hooked up without messing with the factory heating and all that. Just a patch job to get cold air. Is that a good idea? Is there somewhere I can find step by step procedures on this? Thanks for the help in advance.

There are aftermarket companies that sell ac kits. It is very involved and comes with step by step instructions.
They run anywhere from 1500 on up. Look on line for these units.

If you have good auto salvage/recycling yard nearby. You could ask if they have the same truck with a/c. It is a very involved job to change over, but can be done if you have some time.
