Jeep shut off while driving down the road, found coil wire was burned in two at coil. Put new wire on had no fire, figured coil was bad, replaced that still no fire. After looking on the Internet saw that a common problem was crank position sensor, so I replaced that, still nothing. Have checked the voltage at tps, map, cps, and camshaft position sensor, all had the 5 volts. Checked voltage at coil had 12 volts, checked all fuses, good fuel pressure, starter turns great just cannot get spark

I have had this problem before on many different types of vehicles with the distributor either comes apart internally or the wires short out, what usually happens is it damages the computer which sends a signal to the distributor, on the German vehicles I could send the computer in and have it repaired, I don't know about American vehicles. But I'm sure with a 1996 you should be able to find plenty of junkyard. I would replace the distributor cap First.
