Turn key, no sound except gas pump all light come on and will not crank. Got under jeep hotwired starter solinoid-starter cranks-then back into car and it now starts with key, bur only once. I have backup lights, so probably not the NSS. Any ideas.

The most likely suspect is the neutral safety switch, especially if you can shift between neutral and park a few times, then it works. It's a rather expensive part. People have been known to take them apart to clean the contact strips.

The entire starter system can be broken down into four circuits, and each one has a key test point at the starter relay socket. Do you have a test light, and do you want to diagnose this yourself?
