I have a 1996 chrysler sending convertible jxi, it runs great, low miles, but out of nowhere it will not crank, you have to wait 10 min sometimes days before it will just mystery start tuning again as normal until it decides not to crank again. What could be the problem, towed it to several mechanics and when it arrives it just cranks, no one can figure out what is going on.

If you hear a single kind of loud clunk each time you turn the ignition switch to "crank", suspect worn contacts in the starter solenoid. They always start out as an intermittent problem. It will crank eventually if you cycle the ignition switch enough times.

The contacts can be replaced for 20 bucks but most people just replace the entire starter.
