Another possibility is the ignitor, especially a car this old.

My car lower part of the engine shakes causing the exhaust to shake as well. When it is in park for the most part it doesn't stall. However when im in reverse or drive and I stop it always stalls unless I put it in neutral. At times when im driving I don't feel like its giving me the right amount of power. It seems like it struggles to perform at avg capacity. I got a tune up with distributor cap, rotor button, spark plugs and engine air filer two months ago. When it is on the lift, you can see the bottom part of the motor shaking. What could my problem be?

Hi there,

A number of things can be causing this rough idle, as you have not said if it is a carby or an EFI engine I will suggest a few items to check for each type. Do a comp test if you have a low compression this will cause a rough idle. On carby engines they have a problem with sucking in the manifold gasket and causing a vacuum leak, if EFI have a scan done as well. Stat here.

In addition to what Mark said, have the motor mounts checked, especially the rear mount.

What can cause the car to miss or run badly after I have changed the spark plugs and wires. I have put in new plugs and wires at least 3 times this month. The car is still running ruff. The timing has also been checked. What else can I try.

Hi bgmatis,

What is the misfiring like? Hard acceleration? Idling etc. At what rpm most noticeable.

It could be the injectors, distributor + coil and also bad compression.

Check spark plugs for fouling, and if wires are original, replace them.

Possibilities are ignition coil, or ignition module, vacuum leak.

Or could be mechanical, bad valve, low compression.
