Ifit slipd when it gets hot, the second shop may not have driven it enough. Did the second shop give you an explination of why it feels that way when you drive for along time?

If it wont shift properly when hot, there may be something wrong with it. Try having it serviced first with Honda trans fluid to see if it will help, its a cheap thing to try before having any major work done

Hi there,

Thank you for the donation.

There is not a lot you can do here apart from check the oil level, I would get it off to a transmission specialist ASAP and get a diagnosis done as you will be doing damage to the transmission if you keep driving it like this.

Hi there,

Hopefully it may be a quick fix if it is a faulty solenoid valve or something in the valve body, but we just can't be sure until it has been checked over first hand, go get a test and report done and if in doubt about their recommendations re post with the findings.

I recently purchased a 1992 Honda Accord Wagon with transmission issues. The transmission slips slightly when it first gets going, and as it warms up, I start losing gears, eventually having only 1st gear as it gets hot. I replaced the TCU and the lower solenoid pack (was receiving a Code 7) but the transmission still slips. I THOUGHT it may have been because there was too much ATF in the transmission (the dipstick shows fluid nearly twice as high as the "full" mark). So, I took it to a Honda shop to have the ATF and filter changed but they wouldn't changed it b/c they said it wouldn't help at all and that I needed to have the transmission replaced. So. Questions: Would draining off the excess fluid help the transmission to function more properly? If I were to attempt to replace the transmission myself, do I need to take the engine out as well, or would I be able to replace the transmission without doing so?

Hi howitzers,

Overfilling of ATF can cause shifting problems and why did you not remove the excess fluid and test first?

Removal of the trans does not require the engine to be removed. However there are a lot of work to be done.

Didn't drain the excess ATF because I have no way to drain it (No jack stands, no draining tool). I'm not that mechanically inclined, but i'm learning. Will try that over the next couple of days and provide an update. I'm also quite afraid to drive it out, as I don't want to be stranded. I BARELY made it home the last time the transmission heated up. Guess the ATF got really frothy.

I have a 1990 honda accord that is having transmission I problems I figure. It will crank up fine but when you shift into gear it will drive a short distance maybe a 100 feet and then it just slips out of gear and will not move, like its in neutral. I can turn the ignition off and crank it back up and make it another 100 feet and it will do the same thing. Does anyone know what might be the problem? Im hoping it doesnt need a new transmission, although ive heard they run forever.

HI there,

Best you try and get this inspected by a transmission specialist, you may be doing more damage driving it, just check the fluid level and condition first.

This will have to be checked by a trans specialist as they have the special tooling required to do this work, general mechanics won't be able to offer the same service, just firstly check the oil level & condition and make sure that the selector cable is working correctly and moving freely.
