I get a ratcheting noise occasionally while switching from reverse to drive, especially on a cold motor. Today, I also began to get the same noise and some transmission slip while it tried to shift from 3rd to 4th. What's going on in the tranny?

The noise is common and not an issue. However, the slipping isn't. Are you sure the trans fluid is clean and full? Have any lights come on?

No lights, good fluid level though I assume it's original. I bought the car with 62,000 miles and have had it for 20,000 miles now.

If the trans is slipping, you really should have a trans tech check it. You may need to have it rebuilt.
