Honeycomb air intake

I got a 1994 Buick. There is a honey cone looking thing were the air flow is what would happen if I got rid of it mine is all rotting out right after the air filter but right at the air intake on carburetor?

The honey comb thins is a mass air flow sensor you need that to run the car. Make sure the duct work running from filter to throttle body has no holes in it or is not unclamped someplace. If it has holes in it your car won't run right if at all.
