Full of gas. New battery, new battery wire heads. Everything lights up and
all the bells ring. It will grind and grind but won't boost off. I've sprayed starter
fluid in the "breather," I've tapped the starter with a hammer - ( Used to make
my old Dodge start that way.)

It just keeps grinding. I smell a little gas after trying to start it but doesn't seem
to be as much as smell as one would expect.

What else can I try before calling a mechanic?

Thanks,
Mary

If it cranks good but won't start, normal starter motor cranking, then, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If you have spark everywhere, check fuel pressure.
