Hello all,

The honda starts right up, idles fine, and drive fine except when the RPMs hit 18-2000 when under load.
it bucks and chokes lite popping (backfires)

I can push thru it once over 3000 problem goes away. Or grab a lower gear and punch it.
Fine on the freeway.

twice the check engine lite has come on. Then off the next startup. This has been going on for 6 months.
I am able to drive it. But its not ready for my daughter.

Which way should I go?

Thanks
David in Seattle

No codes come up, new plugs. As I said it starts and runs strong except at about 2000 rpms where it stumbles. 2 times the check engine lite came on during said stumble 50 times it did not. The lite does not stay on the next time the car is started.

A code reader will not solve problem. Need diagnostic scan tool hooked to car by a trained Tech. Otherwise just throwing parts in hope something works. @ $80-$100 is charge and often times applied to repair. I believe a lean condition is causing trouble try adding SeaFoam to fuel see it that helps

Thanks for your response.

I am confused about how to connect a scan tool to 92 honda. OBD-1 isn't it.
A device that connects under the glove box?

Are you referring to another diagnostic tool?

Also the behavior could be transitory fuel starvation. That fits better with the check engine light being triggered occasionally simultaneous to the bucking.

Its very specific and repeatable in that RPM range
