Hello, I have a 1987 Toyota mini cruiser auto with the 22re engine." Toyota pickup". It has been sitting for a year or so. Starts once then shuts off right away, then tough to restart. I replaced the fuel regulator about two years ago, I just replaced the MAF today "same". Fairly new plugs and relays. Fuel pump seems to be turning on and a ton of fuel pressure when opening the cold start plug thingy on top of engine. Hmm, I put some new fuel in also " few gallons" tank was close to empty. Please direct me to some more steps I could take. Only has 43,000 miles. Thanks

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com.

Based on your description, the first thing I would check is the ignition pick up coil in the distributor. Here are the directions for testing. If the vehicle has been sitting, make sure there is no corrosion causing loss of signal. All attached pictures correlate with these directions.

PICK-UP COIL TEST

Fig. 17 Pick-up coil connector terminal identification.
Fig. 18 Checking pick-up coil air gap (Typical)

These ignition systems may use up to three pick-up coils.
1. On models with external coil, disconnect electrical connector(s) to distributor. On models with internal coil, remove distributor cap, rotor and dust shield, if equipped.
2. On all except 3S-FE, 3S-GE, 5M-GE and 7M-GE engines, measure resistance between pick-up coil terminals as shown in Figs. 13 and 14. On 4A-GE, 4A-GEL, 4A-GEC and 4A-GELC engines, two pick-up coil connectors are used. Measure resistance between the two sets of pick-up terminals separately.
3. On 5M-GE engines, measure resistance between white and yellow wire terminals and between white and red wire terminals in distributor connector, Fig. 15.
4. On 3S-GE and 7M-GE engines, measure resistance between terminals G1 and G-, G2 and G- and Ne and G-, Fig. 16.
5. On 3S-FE engines, measure resistance between G and G- terminals, then the Ne and G- terminals, Fig. 17.
6. Pickup coil resistances should be 130-190 ohms on 3A-C engines, or 140-180 ohms on all other engines.
7. If resistance is not within specifications, pick-up coil, distributor housing or distributor should be replaced.
8. Rotate crankshaft as necessary to align one tooth or reluctor with pick-up pole piece(s), Fig. 18, and ensure that air gap is.008-.016 inch. Use non-magnetic feeler gauge when checking air gap. Engines may use one, two or three pick-up coils. Check air gap for all coils as outlined.
9. If pick-up coil air gap is incorrect, adjust as necessary. On some models, pick-up coils are not adjustable. If air gap is incorrect, the distributor or distributor housing must be replaced.

Wow Joe, I really appreciate all your help! Thank you very much! I had a friend check it all this morning and he says it is all working. The fuel pump is not working he said and told me to research relays etc. I am trying to locate them now. It is strange because a few days ago there was plenty of fuel coming out of the cold start plug when opened and key was on. Now zero comes out. Also the check engine light will not come on at all for codes etc.

Hi again. The check engine light may not be on. However, there may be codes stored. Here is a link that shows how to retrieve Toyota OBD1 codes. It also lists the what the codes mean (not sure if you meant the light is inoperative or if it is not staying on indicating a problem)

Here are the directions for checking the fuel pump relay. The first three pictures correlate with these directions. The remaining pictures identify relay locations.

i
INSPECTION OF CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY
1. CHECK CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY OPERATION
(a)Remove the right kick panel, glove box and speaker.
(b)Using a voltmeter, check that the meter indicates voltage at Fp terminal during engine cranking and running.
(c)Stop the engine.

Circuit Opening Relay
2. MEASURE RESISTANCE OF CIRCUIT OPENING RELAY
(a)Disconnect the connector.
(b)Measure the resistance between each terminal.

Resistance Between Terminals:
STA - E1 17 - 25 Ohms
+B - Fc 88 - 132 Ohms
+B - Fp Infinity

Let me know if this helps. Also, if you try starting the engine with starting fluid, it will answer if it is a fuel or spark related issue. If it starts, then it is fuel related. If it will not start, then spark is an issue also.

Take care,
Joe
