My 87 z24 cavalier's trans doesn't drop into gear right away when I first start the car. After that it seems to shift and run ok

Make sure your fluid is full. It may be the seals are wearing and not working real well when it's cold. If you have alot of miles on it like over 100,000 it can probably be expected due to it's age being 20 years old or more.
