I have an 86 nissan sentra xe automatic 1.6 L. The starter was making a horrible grinding noise and then went to start one day and nothing. I replaced the starter. The starter I bought the solenoid was on the opposite side from the original and the gears was mush bigger. But everything else lined up. So it was installed, worked for 2 days with grinding sounding worse, went to start it up, and the wires began to smoke. Repaired all the wires and it still did not start. Took the starter in and it tested fine. The starter was mounted back in and it worked. Two days later, it quit again. Pulled that starter out, replaced with another starter that was identical to the original, checked all fusible links, relays, and fuses. Could the coil wire going to the distributor cap cause the starter to short or burn out? If it is not holding tight?
