1984 lincoln town car. speed sensor and cable were replaced and speedo worked fine for about 30 miles and stopped. next day worked for about 5 miles and stopped. Is this a problem in the gear box and, if so, can it be repaired easily.

Remove the cable @ the transmission and spin it with a drill chuck. See if it works from there up .

Hi djcl, thanks for answering so fast. Yes I have removed the cable at the transmission end and spun with my fingers. The speedo needle works fine. When I have removed the speedo end and driven the car slowly the cable seems to turn for a while but then seems to stop turning until I go in reverse and then it turns again.

You should be able to remove the assy in the car. I'm not 100 % shore but there should be a clamp that holds it in.
