1983 Oldsmobile Cutlass car shut off

I start my engine sounds good but sometimes it sounds and it feels like its going to shut off but as soon as I put it it into reverse or drive the engine shuts off or sometimes when I come to a stop It shuts off. I start it back up like nothing and once again put it in gear and shuts off I have to step on the gas before I shift into gear.

I assume this has a carburetor. With a 30 year old carb, issues like this are not unusual and it probably needs to be replaced but have someone knowledgeable look at the car a verify that.
