I have a 2000 bonneville with 83,000 miles with 3.8l engine. Question is. Does the wear sensor on the brake pads go towards the top or bottom? And why would this make any differance? I had replaced the rear ones and had the sensor to the top. Brakeing wasnt right. Changed pads around so sensor was to bottom and breaks work better. Also going to replace master cylinder this weekend. Any info I should know befor geting into this project? Thanks in advance.

A few things, Why replace the mastercylinder?

The sensor need to be in a position so that the rotor rotation going forward will push the sensor into the pad.

Get caliper grease

make sure you get these areas VERY clean with wire wheel or what have you. Remove the tin clips and clean them as well. Make it clean and free moving, this is critical to a good job.

IF you have rear drum brakes, clean and adjust tehm also.
