I was driving on the highway and heard some ticking and knocking it got louder, then the engine stopped and couldn’t start it. I had it towed to a mechanic and he told me it had a bad engine and it needed to be replaced. What could have happened to the engine? They couldn’t provide details, only said it would cost more than the car was worth. Is it worth fixing? Should I have someone else look at it?

Hi,

If there was low or no oil pressure, that would have caused it to happen. Also, too little engine oil can cause it. There are other things as well.

When you heard the knocking, did the oil light/gauge indicate a problem?

The engine that is in your vehicle (4.0L) is an excellent engine and this is usually not an issue, but things happen. As far as replacing it, what condition is the vehicle in other than this new issue? What are they quoting you to replace the engine?

The funny thing is this. Based on the year, normally I would say it may not be the best financial decision to do it. But vehicle prices are out of control, and to replace it may be hard to do for a good price. So, if it was my vehicle, it would be based on the vehicle's condition, are there any other known issues, and take a look at KBB. COM to see its value if it is in good condition.

Also, take a little time and check out what it will cost you to replace it. As aforementioned, prices are out of control. It may be worth fixing it if what you find is too high.

One other thought, have them quote you a price and make sure you contact a few other shops to get quotes. You are welcome to let me know what they are charging, and I can provide advice.

Let me know what I can do to help you.

Joe
