When I started the engine and moved gear change in 'R' position I felt kind of a wince. Then I drove backwards, stopped and changed gear change position to 'D' and felt a wince once again. After that, whenever I shift to R, P or any other gear there is a wince and even some small noise/grinding. Else what happens is that when I step on the gas pedal car slows down even though RPM goes up.

Hi,

If the RPM's increase and the vehicle slows down, it sounds like the transmission is slipping. Have you checked the transmission fluid to confirm the fluid is clean and full? Also, is the check engine light staying on when the engine is running?

Let me know. If you haven't checked the fluid, here are directions for doing it. Also, the attached picture correlates with the directions.

1. CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL

HINT: Drive the vehicle so that the engine and transaxle are at normal operating temperature.

Fluid temperature: 70 - 80°C (158 - 176°F)
a. Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.
B. With the engine idling and the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift lever into all positions from P to L position, and return to P position.
C. Take out the dipstick and wipe it clean.
D. Put it back fully into the pipe.
E. Take it out and check that the fluid level is in the HOT position.
If there are leaks, it is necessary to repair or replace O-rings, FIPGs, oil seals, plugs and/or other parts.

Let me know. If it is low on fluid, make sure to use the correct type for this vehicle.

Take care,
Joe

Hi,
First of all, thanks for answering!
I did perform fluid level check and that looks okay. Unfortunately, transmission doesn't work at all now, no matter in which shift lever is moved, nothing happens, it's completely unresponsive. Any more ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,

First, check to see if the gear indicator is working. Also, have you checked to make sure the linkage is moving on the transmission?

Let me know.

If the indicator is working, that tells me the range sensor is working. Either we lost the transmission or for some reason pressure has dropped. The best thing to do would be to have the computer scanned with a scanner which can read transmission codes. Otherwise, we need to check line pressure.

I don't know how comfortable you are with checking, but here are the directions for checking line pressure on the transmission. This is where I would start if I didn't have a scanner.

Measure the line pressure.

NOTE:
- Do the test at normal operation fluid temperature 50 - 80 °C (122 - 176 °F)
- The line pressure test should always be carried out in pairs. One technician should observe the conditions of wheels or wheel stoppers outside the vehicle while the other is doing the test.
- Be careful to prevent SST's hose from interfering with the exhaust pipe.

1. Warm up the ATF.
2. Remove the test plug on the transaxle case front left side and connect SST.
SST 09992-00095 (09992-00231, 09992-0271)
3. Fully apply the parking brake and chock the 4 wheels.
4. Connect an OBD II scan tool or LEXUS hand-held tester to DLC3.
5. Start the engine and check idling speed.
6. Keep your left foot pressed firmly on the brake pedal and shift into D position.
7. Measure the line pressure when the engine is idling.
8. Depress the accelerator pedal all the way down. Quickly read the highest line pressure when engine speed reaches stall speed.
9. In the same manner, do the test in R position.

If the measured pressure is not up to specified value, recheck the throttle cable adjustment and retest.

Let me know. Also, if you have never changed the transmission fluid, you may consider removing the pan to confirm the filter isn't plugged.

Let me know.
