I am in the market for an affordable used SUV that has to be AWD or 4WD because I live in the mountains with tons of snow. I am considering a 2003 Lincoln Navigator Luxury 4WD with ~ 127,000 miles for $6,995 or a 2005 Nissan Armada with ~138,000 miles for a little bit more.

I would love to know what you think the better used car is. Thank you!

Hi,

Please understand, this is a hard question to answer without knowing the history of the vehicles or present conditions. However, here is how I feel. Both vehicles are excellent vehicles. If both were equal in condition, I suspect I would select the Lincoln. And from personal experience, I can tell you the Navigator won't do too good on fuel, but the Nissan will likely do worse. I had a Lincoln and a Titan, which is the truck version of the Armada. It loved fuel.

Both vehicles commonly have issues with exhaust manifolds leaking. The Nissan is known for them to actually crack which is a big repair. As far as the Lincoln, pay attention to see if you notice a ticking from under the hood which could indicate a manifold leak. One more thought. If you decide on the Lincoln, have the seller have the spark plugs replaced for you. They are known to have issues with the threads in the cylinder head to strip. If that happens, it is expensive to repair, so let them take the chance.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have specific questions.

Take care,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thank you for your response. That helped a ton! I personally liked the Lincoln better but I wanted to make sure I wasn't making an emotional decision about purchasing a car.

I found another car last night I'd like your two cents on. It is a 2011 Ford Expedition XL with 84,000 miles. I had an F150 with a triton engine that I loved, so I'm inclined to lean toward Ford products. This particular car has the Flex Fuel, and I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

Thanks again for your help!

Hi,

The Lincoln is basically a glorified version of the Expedition. Lincoln is manufactured by Ford. Both are good vehicles with similar issues.

As far as the flex fuel, it won't hurt anything. I personally won't use it, but it's nice to know the vehicle can if needed. Flex fuel is a mixture of gasoline and up to 83% ethanol. Usually, it is less expensive, but you will lose fuel economy.

Let me know what you decide and if you have questions. I'm interested in knowing.

Take care,

Joe

I'm leaning toward the Lincoln based on price and comfort or the Expedition based on mileage. I'm going to forget the Armada based on your feedback. I will keep you posted. Thank you again Joe!
