It is winter time again here in Canada. And my question is, do I have to warm up the engine of my vehicle before driving? I read articles that engine should not be warm up during the winter because it damages and shorten the life of the engine. Thanks a lot and hoping for your most appreciated reply.

Good morning,

Leaving an engine run unattended can cause damage if something happens without you there.

The engine needs to be at normal operating temperature before moving so there is no damage done while it is cold.

I think the best solution is to get a block heater installed that will keep the engine warm by keeping the oil and coolant warm. Then you can just disconnect the heater, jump in the car, start it and have instant heat and off you go.

So what is the normal operating temperature then and does it mean? I have to warm the engine before driving? So I have to let it idle to get the normal temperature right?
One more question, once I started my vehicle does the oil is being pump out to the moving components? Thank you.

Normal operating temperature is around 190 degrees.

Yes, you should let it run at idle until it reaches the temperature.

Yes, oil is being pumped to all the bearings during this time.
