- the vehicle starts up
- there are no strange noises
- the shifter moves back and forth (but won't "lock" into reverse)
- when locked into any of the drive gears it does not move when the gas is pressed
any clues on what i screwed up while towing?
Have the transmission inspected and likely rebuilt or replaced. Towing this rear-wheel-drive car on a dolly without removing the driveshaft can let the axle turn the transmission without lubrication pressure or cooling and destroy it.
The owner towed a 1989 Volvo 760 Turbo on a tow dolly in neutral from Washington to Virginia. After unhooking it, the car sometimes would not move, then briefly drove about 10 miles before losing drive again. It starts, makes no unusual noises, and the shifter moves but will not lock into reverse; selecting a drive gear produces no movement. The expert said a rear-wheel-drive car should have the driveshaft removed before dolly towing, because neutral does not stop the axle from turning inside the transmission and can destroy it without engine-driven cooling and pressure.
