I have an 86 volvo 740 GL (no turbo) with 205,000 miles. It is an automatic.

The car is in excellent condition, but lately I've been having problems when changing gears. When I accelerate the car it will begin to tug between each gear. This problem only happens when I accelerate the first few times. Once the car has been running for awhile the gears will change normal. I have noticed that the "tugging" is worse when I let the car sit for a moment afrer driving for a little bit (i.E being stopped at a traffic light for a couple of minutes).
Also, the last time I filled up the tank with gas, the gas needle went back and forth eratically for a couple of minutes until it finally settled down and read at the right level. My gas mileage has also seemed to be worse than usual.

What steps should I take to ensuring my cars repair, without spending a ton of money( I am a college student and have very little money to spend).

Thank- You

Get the transmission serviced, change the filter and hope for the best. At that many miles it has a right to be jerky a bit I know I am. Make sure the mechanic has the knowledge to change it and use a good grade of fluid.
