There is a valve on the rear of the engine called a kombi valve, on start up and whilst driviing it makes a rattle noise like a loose timing chain but it is definately coming from that valve.I have replaced the valve twice but the noise is still coming from valve. The VW agents say it does make the noise on startup but owner says wasn't there before!I have traced from valve back & found it links to an electric pump which seems to assist the turbo. In this valve it has a diaphram & spring and it seems as if the spring is weak, which can't be as it has been replaced twice. If anyone has had this problem before advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds as if it is part of the AIR injection system. The electric motor injects air into the engine when it is at its dirtiest, initial start up and when cold. See if the opposite end goes to the exhaust, and if there is another valve there. If there is, remove the valve and see if it is letting exhaust flow back to the valve you are talking about.I tis supposed to be a check valve and not leat exhaust flow that direction, which may be the casue of the rattle in the 'Kimbo"valve.
