My Passat indicated low oil pressure and is now in the shop at VW because they claim that the engine may need to be rebuilt if scoring occurred. The car is maintained according to schedule so when it is fixed how can I be sure it will not happen again. I understand this happening with the oil gelling is a common occurrence with Passats.

Hi there,

I don't know about VW Passat's having this as a typical problem, Oil jelling is a problem where the incorrect oil is used for long periods of infrequent use in very cold conditions. A problem normally associated with diesels where a high wax content of fuel is used. I often came across this problem with industrial machines left idling for long periods and suffering from lack of oil changes, often the oil being just topped up instead. Now for a passenger car to suffer this type of damage in my location (warm to hot conditions) is very uncommon. I would be asking for a detailed report on damage before considering what to do about it. There may be other reasons why the oil pressure was indicating low, I would want to know that they have diagnosed the problem correctly.
